Gareth Pugh: A/W 2009 RTW at Paris Fashion Week

"This is not from a spaceship, it's from under the ground. I wanted it to feel earthy."

The only thing earthy about this collection was the budget- attendees to the Gareth Pugh show at Boulevard Faubourg de Saint-Martin yesterday were given credit sheets stating simply "Model: Natasa Vojnovic" before watching the entire collection projected onto a screen hovering above a swamp of dry ice smoke. Remind anyone of the Viktor & Rolf S/S 2009 show with Shalom Harlow?

The collection combined space-age with nouveau-gothic. Silver satellite panelled jackets and anoraks, patent leather detailing, evil looking spiked fur, articulated leather boots, and oddly appealing cube-shapes hat made this a rather peculiar yet theatric and stunningly fluid showing.

The designer's intention for the collection to feel earthy is even more intriguing- in your natural struggle to interpret this statement, it occurs to you just how profound it may be.
