White Trend Lives on at Rochas

Milan spoke and Paris agreed: Translucent-and-white is an official fact of spring. While Rochas introduced a lot more color to the runway this season, crisp whites seemed to carry through the entire collection in see-through fabrics and relaxed silhouettes. With slouchy pants and breezy skirts, Rochas seems to have a very Kate Bosworth feel this season.

Trussardi 1911

Back in February 2007, the District L duo attended Milan Fashion Week for our second season. After a long couple days of fashionizing, we made a point to have dinner at Il Ristorante Trussardi. In a word, it was perfect. It was luxuriously chic, not overtly trendy and loud. It was well thought out, yet not pretentious, and absolutely delicious. While reviewing Trussardi 1911's runway show this season, I got a similar taste.

At a first glance, I immediately thought of Carine Roitfeld. The looks were body-conscious, yet not forced. Sexy, but relaxed. Confident, but not gregarious. Will we see these pieces in the Paris front-rows? I look forward to it.

Dsquared2: White Trash Chic?

Advisory: This post will be using the terms "White Trash" and "Chic" in the same sentence. Never will these terms be used in similar sentence structure ever again.

White trash chic was the campy theme of Dean and Dan's runway show. Channeling patriotic pick-up trucks, pregnant prom queens, and porch drinking, Dsquared2 used an unspeakable amount of prom dress fabric, fleece, and trucker hats. Is it a jab at our ignorant, unsophisticated society? Were they watching too much blue collar comedy? Regardless, we always expect a crazy show from Dsquared2... and they always deliver.

Milan Speaks: White and Sheer

The Italians want their ladies in  white this spring. But don't call momma just yet - because this trend has some very sexy interpretations. Dolce and Gabanna gave us white, translucent lace, while Fendi and Etro gave us more of a relaxed breezy look. Gucci, of course, gave us a sleek white look with sheer cutouts. Hot.

Quotable

"People are scared of fashion — because they're frightened or insecure, so they put it down. There is something about fashion that can make people very nervous." -Anna Wintour, The September Issue

Milan is having fun. Why can't you?

Ok, most people can agree that Milan Fashion Week has been way more light-hearted than New York Fashion Week. (It's spring, goddammit!)

Moschino, of course, was not one to tone down the fun. With flower-like sunglasses and optimistic shades of pink, Rosella Jardini reminds us to lighten up. Following the trends spotted in New York, Rosella sent big, floppy bows down the runway... of course! All we need now is a few accessories from Dylan's Candy Store.

Runway Rundown

This is what we like to hear... Long live the high-heel!

Fashion Week photographer, Richard Renda is celebrating Cupcakes for a Cause.

New York designer, Adam Lippes, is spending some time in LA at the moment.

Social Life Magazine is holding a private event this evening at 6pm. No invite? Well, you can still go to Fashionista Thursdays at Fashion 40 at 202 West 40th Street.

Milan Madness

What do you call a full week of fashion shows condensed into four days? Oh, that would be this season's Milan Fashion Week. Because of Yom Kippur, Milan Fashion Week will start on Thursday and end on Sunday. With the opening of Prada's concept store, Stefanel's 50th anniversary party, and Dolce & Gabbana's appearance at La Rinascente, this will be one long weekend in Italia.

Dio santo!

Know Knot, Want Knot

After New York Fashion Week was all tied up we were happy to see Burberry interpreting the trend from another angle. Christopher Bailey pulled and twisted all of his looks to show us his hotts for knots.

Christopher Kane's Lolita

Following suit with this season's trends of sheer fabrics, cutouts, and semi-bare midriffs, Christopher Kane evokes a feeling of naughty naiveté. This little Lolita knows exactly what she's doing.

Peeps are getting stale.

My once-favorite street fashion blog has gone blah. Street Peeper, which used to snap photos of cutting-edge chicsters, continues to photograph the run-of-the-mill grungy wannabe hipster-types. We get it, Peeps, but its over.

After this and this and this, its safe to say that just dressing "ironically" and not washing your hair is no longer considered fashionable or edgy. Don't get me wrong - the hipster principles will never die in New York, (ie. dressing in outrageous outfits, partying for 12 days straight, unexplainable eccentricities, etc.) yet this old strain of hipsterism is done:

Color Block

Nicole Farhi revisited the color block, but instead of feeling retro, the looks just seemed fresh. Teals and yellows layered beneath beige and black. Pops of green with a cream base.

London's Farhi is feeling optimistic and letting some color shine through.

The Fall of Luxury?

This is why the luxury industry has been suffering. Brands are losing their exclusivity. Designers are selling out.

District L chicsters are fashion purists. This is unacceptable.

Accessories with Energy

One of the many fabulous things about Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week are the amazing people who flock to Bryant Park for the week. One unforgettable individual I met was accessories designer, Isaiah Garza. With tons of enthusiasm, he introduced me to his custom-designed headbands that "can really juice up and outfit." The accessories match his energy: bright, interesting, and memorable.

His fun, bold looks are not intended for the meek. But the meek don't read this site anyway...

Novel Necklines

This season, a lot of the action is happening around the shoulders. At Thuy, exposed zippers drew attention to the shoulders and upper back. At Toni Maticevski, fabric was gathered high above the collarbone. Fabric was intertwined above the bust at Yeohlee too.

Spring's answer to emphasized shoulders, maybe?
